Refreshing a 150 year old brand

Schalke Locomotives GmbH has stood the test of time with their superior quality and commitment to forward-thinking. smrt studio was privileged enough to help this manufacturing juggernaut organize their brand and create a new website, overhauled from the tracks up.

The why’s

Schalke Locomotives GmbH, founded in 1872 had held true to their logo over the years, however through the years a few different versions had found their way into circulation as a result of their long-standing history. Different colours and dimensions required a deep dive into the true “Schalke blue”, and also devise a system for maintaining the rich brand recognition with a unified approach.

Logo definition for Schalke

A badging approach for the Schalke logo was used to contain the logo, maintain accurate colour, and ensure the logo was accurately represented across all applications, including the locomotives themselves. The true “Schalke blue” is important to both company heritage and future branding efforts so some detective work was required to find the true origin of the famous “Schalke blue”.

Logo design for ModuTrac™

Schalke’s modular traction technology, ModuTrac™ needed it’s own identity to give it the recognition it deserved. A new ModuTrac™ logo would also allow for a separate set of marketing efforts that would be focused around ModuTrac™ and the benefits for mining, urban rail, and specialty purpose locomotive builds.

Website redesign

New pages, content, images, colours – you name it. Full rebuild from the ground up. This site needed an English representation, as well as German, since the company is based in Germany. The site was launched in 3 phases to suit important company attendance at conferences, while still keeping an eye on the importance of a robust site build.
